Doug Bergstein '83

At one point there was a front page picture of me pitching. [The Burlington Free Press] wanted to print it after I beat Mt. Mansfield (a big rivalry) but I didn't pitch all that well. So, they printed it after the next game. I think it was during the '83 season.

One story that I will not forget was during the 1982 playoffs against Spaulding. We were Division II and they were Division I but we had a higher seed. Despite that, they were favored to win. I was pitching and got hit pretty hard. We went into extra innings. I think it was the bottom of the 8th and we had runners in scoring position. My friend, Tom Bergeron, came in to pinch hit. He was not a starter and didn't get to play much. He loved the game and studied its intricacies. He definitely couldn't hit for power (except in wiffle ball) but he always got a bat on the ball. And that was his job during this at-bat. He worked the count and hit a ground ball through the right side of the infield. I couldn't believe how slowly the ball moved as the winning run scored. I was really happy for Tom because he never got much credit for his skills.
