Tom Bergeron '82

December 19, 2002

Hey Josh,

Yes, I'm the Tom Bergeron that singled in extra innings to beat Spaulding in the Quarter-Finals in 1982. Doug [Bergstein] is fairly accurate, but this is how I remember it....

8th Inning, 1 out, Scott Weinheimer was on 3rd. Spaulding infield was playing in. Bob Degree had been DH for me throughout the game (I was at 3rd base). Coach Ron Matthews called on me to hit for Bob. He told me: "If you can't hit the first pitch out of the infield, bunt on the second."

I expected to lay down a bunt and squeeze Scott home on the second pitch, but on the first pitch, the Spaulding pitcher gave me a fastball right down the middle, so I took a swing....I sent the ball back up the middle, just to the right of second base, and past a diving Spaulding 2nd baseman. I ran down the line to first base, and watched the ball "trickle" through the infield. I started celebrating about half way down line, but made sure I touched 1st base.

Thanks for bringing back such an awesome memory! It's been over 20 years and I remember it as if it just happened yesterday.
